Bad breath is not only embarrassing, it is also socially offensive. 50 percent of adults in America suffer from bad breath, which is also known as halitosis. Bad dental hygiene, gum disease, cavities, and the hundreds of bacteria living in your mouth are causing the foul smells.

You may think that the solution to your bad breath is easy: just brush your teeth and use mouth wash, right? For those suffering from chronic halitosis, these techniques are not always strong enough to make a lasting difference.

Here are some at home remedies to help reduce your bad breath and, possibly, win a few new friends:

• Clean your tongue: Don’t just brush your tongue with a toothbrush. Grab a spoon and use it to scrape off the bacteria that lives on your tongue. For many, this bacteria is a cause of bad breath.

• Use baking soda as your mouthwash: Swap your traditional mouthwash that has alcohol as an ingredient with one that you can make at home. Simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda with water and swish it around, but don’t swallow! Baking soda helps kill the bacteria in your mouth that is causing those bad odors.

• Chew Herbs: Herbs including fennel, peppermint, and sage have antibacterial properties that help clean your mouth and increase saliva production. Chewing these on a daily basis can help get rid of your bad breath.

• Avoid certain foods or brush after: Food, drinks, and tobacco are often times the culprit of occasional bad breath. Coffee, garlic, or alcohol can all lead to bad odors but we know that you can’t just avoid these things altogether. When you do consume products that cause bad breath, just do your friends a favor and brush afterward or use mouthwash.

•Hydrate: Bad breath can be caused by dry mouth, which is when your mouth isn’t producing enough saliva. It’s important to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water during the day and, if necessary, use a humidifier in your room at night.
